St. Louis is the only city in the world that set out to become a chess capital on purpose. In 2008 the investor Rex Sinquefield opened a chess club in a quiet corner of the Central West End. Within a decade the city had pulled in the World Chess Hall of Fame, the US Championship, one of the strongest tournaments on earth, the world's largest chess piece, and an act of Congress naming it the Chess Capital of America. I run Checkmate IRL and play most of my chess in Berlin, where the scene is scrappy and improvised: café sets pulled out at random, one-off meetups, nothing official. St. Louis is the opposite. It is the most deliberate chess city in the world, built around a single block in the Central West End where the club, the museum, and a six-metre chess king all sit within sight of each other. No other city has concentrated this much chess in one place on purpose. That is the whole story, and it is a good one.
St. Louis has almost no chess history before 2008, and that is the point. The modern story starts with one man. Rex Sinquefield, a retired index-fund pioneer who grew up in a St. Louis orphanage, decided to make his home city the center of American chess and had the money to try.
In 2008 he founded the Saint Louis Chess Club in the Central West End, a three-storey, purpose-built club with a tournament hall, a classroom, and a library. In 2009 the club hosted its first US Championship, and it has hosted the national title nearly every year since. In 2011 the World Chess Hall of Fame relocated from Miami to a building directly across the street. In 2013 Sinquefield launched the Sinquefield Cup, which quickly became one of the strongest tournaments in the world and the American leg of the Grand Chess Tour.
The recognition followed the money. In 2013 the United States Congress formally named St. Louis the Chess Capital of America. In April 2018 the city unveiled the World's Largest Chess Piece, a roughly six-metre king certified by Guinness World Records, standing on the sidewalk outside the Hall of Fame. Most chess capitals took centuries to earn the name. St. Louis built one in a decade and got Congress to make it official.
The campus pulled the best players in the world to Missouri. The US national team that won Olympic gold in 2016, Fabiano Caruana, Hikaru Nakamura, and Wesley So, is built around players who train and compete at the Saint Louis Chess Club, and the world's top grandmasters fly in every summer for the Sinquefield Cup. The city also became the center of American college chess: Saint Louis University won the national collegiate title in 2022, and nearby Webster University, home to the Susan Polgar Institute for Chess Excellence, has run one of the strongest university programs in the country for over a decade.
For a mid-sized American city, St. Louis has chess infrastructure that no other place in the country can match. The Saint Louis Chess Club is open seven days a week for casual play, with membership starting around $10 a month, free lectures, and weekly tournaments. The Saint Louis Chess Club at 4663 Maryland Avenue is the heart of American chess. It is open seven days a week, roughly 10:00 to 21:00, for casual play, classes, and weekly tournaments, and membership is cheap. This is the rare world-class venue that is genuinely open to beginners: you can sit down for a casual game in the same hall that hosts the US Championship.
The World Chess Hall of Fame at 4652 Maryland Avenue sits directly across the street from the club. It is a museum and gallery covering the history, art, and culture of the game, with rotating exhibitions. Outside it stands the World's Largest Chess Piece, the six-metre king that marks the campus. There is a six-metre chess king standing on a street corner in the Central West End. The city is not subtle about what it has become.
Kingside Diner at 236 N Euclid Avenue is the chess-themed diner a block from the club, with all-day breakfast, a full menu, and boards for a casual game over food. It is the easiest place to refuel between rounds.
Beyond the campus, the casual scene runs through board-game bars and the city's parks.
For outdoor play, Forest Park, one of the largest urban parks in the United States and bigger than Central Park, has chess tables among its pocket parks, some installed through the chess club's outreach. Tower Grove Park in south city is another spot where locals bring boards on weekends.
St. Louis is the capital of American college chess as well as the professional game. Saint Louis University built a team with the club's help and won the national collegiate championship in 2022. Webster University, just outside the city, runs the Susan Polgar Institute for Chess Excellence and has been one of the strongest university programs in the country for years. Washington University in St. Louis has an active, welcoming club for all levels. Between them, the universities keep a steady stream of strong young players in the city.

St. Louis is the youngest chess capital on this list by more than a century, and the only one that was built rather than grown. New York has the oldest street chess in America. St. Louis built the newest institution and holds the title.
