Cologne hosted the German Chess Federation's congress in 1898, and Amos Burn won it ahead of a field that included Steinitz, Chigorin and Schlechter. The club that hosted it was founded in 1861 and now carries Emanuel Lasker's name. Robert Hübner, who played the Candidates final against Korchnoi, was born in the city and died here in January 2025. SG Porz, from the district of the same name, lists 10 German team titles. Today most of Cologne's chess runs through its clubs, with a monthly chess-and-music night at a café-bar in Neuehrenfeld for everyone else. This guide covers where to play in Cologne now and the history underneath it.
I run Checkmate IRL and play most of my chess in Berlin. Cologne asks for a little more planning. The casual scene is thin, and the clubs do most of the hosting: 5 of them run weekly club nights between Tuesday and Friday, and the rest of the chess venues in Cologne are a couple of bars and park boards spread across the districts.
The Kölner Schachklub was founded on 1 October 1861. It calls itself Cologne's oldest chess club and the 11th-oldest surviving chess club in Germany, and its own timeline reads like a guest book of the 19th century's best players. Adolf Anderssen was made an honorary member in 1877 and visited the following year. Wilhelm Steinitz and Johannes Zukertort came in 1881.
In 1898 the club hosted the congress of the Deutscher Schachbund. Amos Burn won ahead of a field that included Steinitz, Chigorin and Schlechter.
The simuls kept coming. Harry Pillsbury played one blindfold in the club in 1902, Carl Schlechter gave one in 1905, and Frank Marshall and Emanuel Lasker both gave one in 1908. In 1911 José Raúl Capablanca gave a simul, and the club marked its 50th anniversary with a congress that featured a match between Schlechter and Siegbert Tarrasch.
The timeline also records the club's worst year. In 1934 it submitted to the Nazi race laws and excluded members classed as "non-Aryan".
In 1948 a club called Dr. Lasker was founded at the KVB, Cologne's transport company. It was named after Emanuel Lasker, whom the club calls the only German world chess champion. That club merged with Köln-Nord in 1952 and with the old Kölner Schachklub in 1960, which produced the name KSK Dr. Lasker 1861. Svetozar Gligorić gave a simul there in 1966. The club moved to the Südstadt in 1984 and has played at Rolandstraße since 1989.
Robert Hübner was born in Cologne on 6 November 1948 and came up through Eisenbahnschachverein Turm Köln from 1957. He became a grandmaster in 1971, the youngest in Germany at the time, and reached a peak rating of 2640, world number 3 in July 1981.
His Candidates matches are a chapter of their own. In 1971 he broke off his match against Tigran Petrosian, citing noise in the hall. In the 1980/81 final against Viktor Korchnoi he led 2 to 1, overlooked a knight fork in game 7 and broke off after game 10. In 1983 he drew Vasily Smyslov 7 to 7 after the tiebreaks and went out of the quarterfinal on the spin of a roulette wheel.
He had a second career as a papyrologist, with a doctorate from the University of Cologne in 1973 and work published in the Kölner Papyri. He played for SG Porz and won German team titles with the club, 1979 among them. He died in Cologne in January 2025.
SG Porz lists 10 German team championships, from 1967 to 2003/04, 7 of them between 1981 and 2000. Wikipedia counts 8, because it only counts titles from the Bundesliga era that began in 1980/81. The club places itself second in the all-time Bundesliga table.
Its teams included Larry Christiansen, Rafael Vaganian, Ivan Sokolov, Loek van Wely, Curt Hansen and Vlastimil Hort, who started playing for Porz before he emigrated from Czechoslovakia in 1985. The first team withdrew from the 1. Bundesliga for 2007/08 and, according to Wikipedia, has turned down promotion since.
The most social chess night in Cologne is the Sonic Chess Club: drinks, chess and DJs, with free entry and every level welcome. It runs once a month on a Thursday from 18:00, usually at Otto Cannoli Café + Bar, Schadowstraße 55 in Neuehrenfeld.
The next dates we have are 19 November and 17 December 2026, both at Otto Cannoli. They come from the club's Instagram, so check there before you go. It's also the social chess club we list for Cologne.
Some editions move. The club's Instagram put its 8th night in September 2026 at oté, a café-bar and culture space at Eigelstein 122, open Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00.
Grünfeld, a bar at Brüsseler Straße 47 in the Belgian Quarter, is named after the grandmaster Ernst Grünfeld and also has table football. City magazines wrote between 2019 and 2024 that guests play chess there, and Mit Vergnügen described it as the home of a chess club. The bar's own website doesn't mention chess and lists no chess night, so ask at the bar. Weekend tables can't be reserved, and reservations are only taken in person.
If you study or work at a Cologne university, the Kölner Studierendenwerk runs free chess nights every Tuesday in lecture term, 18:00 to 21:00, at the Campuslounge in the Mensa Zülpicher Straße. You don't need to register. This winter term the nights run from 13 October 2026 to 2 February 2027. The nights are only open to students and staff of Cologne's universities and the KStW.
I found no board game café in Cologne that advertises chess nights.
Cologne has 5 clubs with weekly nights. League matches are usually played on Sundays at 11:00.
The easiest club to walk into is the Klub Kölner Schachfreunde 1967 (KKS) at Weyerstraße 78, a few metres from Barbarossaplatz (trams 12, 15, 16 and 18). Club nights run on Thursdays and Fridays from 17:00 to midnight. The club's FAQ says to just come by: you don't need to book or be a member. The clubhouse is step-free, and the nights carry on through the school holidays and, the club says, mostly on public holidays too.
On Tuesdays from 17:00 to 18:30 there's beginners' and kids' training that adults can join, and FM Oliver Stork runs youth squad training on Wednesdays. KKS has over 180 members, 16 teams in league play and about 50 active juniors. If you stay, membership is €15 a month for adults, €8 reduced and €5 for juniors.
The KSK Dr. Lasker meets on Thursdays from 20:00 at Rolandstraße 61 in the Südstadt, in the Tagungs- und Gästehaus St. Georg (the BiPis Bistro) near Chlodwigplatz. Take tram 15 or 16, or bus 132 or 133, to Chlodwigplatz. Visitors are welcome on club nights.
Bernhard Nagel runs beginners' training on the 4th Thursday of the month at 19:00, with no membership or prior knowledge needed, and Christian Loeschcke runs advanced training on the 2nd Thursday at 19:00. The club has more than 60 members and doesn't publish its fees. Its open Blitz Grand Prix takes guests, and a guest won the October round.
SG Porz plays on Fridays only, on the 2nd floor of Friedensstraße 116 in Porz-Urbach. Doors open at 16:30. Kids and juniors train from 17:00 to 18:00 and play from 18:00 to 19:30, and adults play from 20:00. The club is closed on public holidays such as Good Friday, and the youth sessions pause in the summer and Christmas school holidays.
About 170 members, roughly half of them juniors, play in 10 adult and 14 youth teams, and the club says it covers every strength from absolute beginner to pro. It doesn't spell out a visitor policy, so get in touch before your first Friday.
The Kalk-Deutz club, formed by a merger in 1992, plays on Fridays at the Protestant parish of Köln-Deutz/Poll, Tempelstraße 29 in Deutz. A city directory listing gives beginners from 18:00 to 19:00, advanced players from 19:00 to 19:45 and general play from 20:00. The listing is undated and I couldn't load the club's own site, so check with the club before you go. It has 33 members.
In Worringen, Cologne's northernmost district, the Schachklub Köln-Worringen holds open play nights for everyone on Tuesdays from 19:00 at the Evangelisches Jugendheim, Hackenbroicher Straße 59-61. The club says guests are always very welcome. Its first team was promoted to the Verbandsliga for 2026/27.
Schachklub Köln-Südwest is active too: it played the Lasker club's third team this season. A directory lists it at the Melanchthon-Kirche, Bornheimer Straße 1a, but I couldn't find a published club night.
I found no city or press source for a regular outdoor chess scene in Cologne. The venue map still lists 18 outdoor spots. There are stone and concrete tables in districts such as Ehrenfeld, Vingst and Longerich, and giant ground boards at the Rheinpark in Deutz, in the Äußerer Grüngürtel and on the Eisenmarkt in the Altstadt, plus more in Müngersdorf, Weiden, Seeberg and Gremberg.
Treat them as mapped boards. For the tables, bring a friend and your own pieces, and if you find a regular game at any of them, tell us.
Most of Cologne's tournaments are club series with fixed dates:
The KKS Grand Prix series runs monthly into 2027, with the Rapid final on 3 June and the Blitz final on 11 June 2027. KKS also runs a traditional Easter, autumn and Christmas tournament.
I found no open weekend tournament in Cologne for November or December 2026. SG Porz's Porzer Schnellschach-Open drew almost 190 players on 7 May 2023, when GM Daniel Fridman won it, and I found no edition since.
For upcoming casual events, see chess events in Cologne.
