Playing Chess in Budapest: From the Polgár Sisters to the Thermal Baths

Budapest's most famous chess spot is a swimming pool. Men have played in the steaming water of the Széchenyi baths for decades. The same city raised the three Polgár sisters, staged the first tournament ever held to pick a world title challenger, and hosted the Chess Olympiad in 2024. This guide covers where to play in Budapest now and the history underneath it.

I run Checkmate IRL and play most of my chess in Berlin, where the game lives in parks and bars. Budapest takes it more seriously. The city has stone tables in the parks, club nights, and a year-round calendar of norm tournaments, all resting on a club history that goes back to around 1840 and on Olympiad gold for both its men and its women.

A brief chess history of Budapest

Hungary's first chess club grew out of a coffee house. The Pest Chess Club is traditionally dated to 1839 and documented from 1842 at the Wurm café, where József Szén, "the Hungarian Philidor", was the strongest player in the room.

In the 1840s the club took on Paris in a correspondence match and won both games. The Hungarian Defence takes its name from that match. Pest beat Paris by post and kept the opening.

One of the club's regulars was Ferenc Erkel, the composer of the Hungarian national anthem. He led the committee that revived the club in 1864 and later served as its president until his death. The man who wrote the anthem also ran the chess club.

In October 1896 the city staged its first great international tournament, in the Pesti Vigadó concert hall, as part of Hungary's millennium celebrations. Mikhail Chigorin won it after a playoff against Rudolf Charousek, a 23-year-old who had beaten world champion Emanuel Lasker that summer. Charousek died of tuberculosis in Budapest in 1900, aged 26.

Earlier in 1896, a casual game in Budapest between Mór Adler and Géza Maróczy began 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e5. Local masters, Gyula Breyer among them, turned it into a weapon, and the Budapest Gambit still carries the city's name.

Géza Maróczy played first board when Hungary won the first official Chess Olympiad in London in 1927. The team won again in The Hague a year later without him. His name survives in the Maróczy Bind, a pawn formation Sicilian players still have to deal with. He's buried in Budapest's Fiumei Road cemetery, which also holds Charousek and Breyer.

In 1950 Budapest hosted the first Candidates Tournament, the event that decides who challenges the world champion. David Bronstein and Isaac Boleslavsky tied for first.

Between 1952 and 1990 the Soviet Union entered 19 Olympiads and won 18 of them. The exception was Buenos Aires 1978, where Hungary took gold by a single point with Lajos Portisch on first board. The one that got away went to Hungary.

Then came the experiment. In 1970 a Budapest teacher, László Polgár, set out to show that geniuses are made, and home-schooled his three daughters in chess to prove it. In 1988 Susan, Sofia and Judit, aged 19, 14 and 12, won the women's Olympiad together with Ildikó Mádl, half a point ahead of the Soviet Union.

In December 1991 Judit Polgár became a grandmaster at 15 years and 4 months, breaking Bobby Fischer's record. She later reached No. 8 in the world.

Fischer himself moved to Budapest after his 1992 rematch with Spassky and spent time analysing with the sisters. He lost his record to a 15-year-old from Budapest, then moved to her city.

How big is the Budapest chess scene today?

Hungarian chess runs through the Magyar Sakkszövetség, the national federation, whose hall at Falk Miksa utca 10 regularly hosts round-robin norm tournaments. The Checkmate IRL database has mapped more than 50 chess venues in Budapest so far, most of them public tables in the parks.

In September 2024 the city hosted the 45th Chess Olympiad at the BOK Sports Hall, where India won gold in both the open and the women's event. Two years later in Samarkand, Hungary finished 7th and its reserve, Gleb Dudin, won an individual gold medal.

Every autumn Judit Polgár's Global Chess Festival takes over the Hungarian National Gallery in Buda Castle for a day. The 12th edition was held on 26 September 2026.

From 10 to 21 November 2026 the Total Chess World Championship Tour holds its pilot event at the New York Palace hotel, the building that houses the New York Café, with Magnus Carlsen expected to play. Budapest chess started in a coffee house, and the elite game is heading back to one.

Chess at the Széchenyi baths

The Széchenyi Thermal Bath in City Park is where the picture comes from: men standing chest-deep in hot water around a chessboard at the edge of the outdoor pool, steam rising off the surface in winter. It's one of the most photographed scenes in the city, and National Geographic has written about the players too.

The game is open to anyone with a ticket to the bath. The regulars play by the wide steps leading into the pool. Reports differ on whether the boards sit on the ledge or float on the water, and nothing suggests the bath lends out pieces, so bring a cheap plastic set if you want to be sure of a game. Bring a towel and an opening you trust.

Outdoor chess in Budapest

The free outdoor game is in City Park as well. At the Városliget sports centre, just inside the Dózsa György út entrance, 12 stone chess tables stand in two rows under the trees. They're free and usable around the clock. The boards are painted on the tabletops, so you need your own pieces.

Károlyi-kert, the small walled garden in the centre, has had a shaded chess corner since the early 1980s, and Kálvária tér in Józsefváros kept its chess tables when the square was renovated.

Beyond those, our map lists more than 40 public tables and giant boards across the districts, among them 6 tables in Kerekerdő park in Ferencváros, 4 concrete tables on Almássy tér in Erzsébetváros that are lit after dark, and a table on the Danube bank at Nehru part. None of them comes with pieces.

Chess clubs and chess nights in Budapest

The closest thing Budapest has to a chess bar is a chess hall, and the night to visit is Wednesday.

Board game cafés and a chess restaurant

For a casual game over a drink, the board game cafés are the easy option. None of them advertises chess by name, so ask at the counter or bring a set.

Szimpla Kert, the best-known ruin bar, turns up in lists of Budapest chess spots. We found no sign that the bar keeps sets, so bring your own if you want a game there.

First Saturday and the norm tournaments

Budapest is where young players come to earn their titles. First Saturday, organised by László Nagy, has run round-robin norm tournaments here for about 35 years. Magnus Carlsen, Fabiano Caruana, Hikaru Nakamura and Péter Lékó all passed through on the way up.

It's played several times a year at the Classic Hotel on Zólyomi út in Buda, with GM, IM and under-2250 groups, starting on the first Saturday of the month. The next edition begins on 5 December 2026, and the 2027 dates are already published. Similar week-long events (SixDays, One Week, Vezérképző) fill the months in between, several of them in the federation's hall.

If you want a title, you book a week in Budapest.
