Kansas City's chess rests on 2 old habits and 1 new one. The Kansas City Chess Club traces its roots to 1895, the Westport Chess Club has been going since 1986 and meets in a bar every Tuesday, and on 3 October 2026 the city got its first chess park: permanent tables on the Rock Island Bridge, above the Kansas River. The metro spans 2 states and so does the chess: most of it is in Missouri, with a monthly club night in Overland Park, Kansas, and a bridge whose address is in Missouri while OpenStreetMap puts its deck in Kansas. This guide covers where to play in Kansas City now and the history underneath it.
I run Checkmate IRL and play most of my chess in Berlin. Kansas City is a small scene with an easy way in: the Westport club night costs $2, your first visit is free, and you don't need to RSVP or bring a board. The rest of the chess venues in Kansas City are mostly outdoor: the new park on the bridge and a giant set on the Central Library roof, plus a board game tavern in the River Market.
According to KCUR, the Kansas City Chess Club began in 1895 as the Kansas City Chess, Checkers, and Whist club. KCUR also reported that Ken Fee has run it since 1997. Today it plays in an office building on North Oak Trafficway in the Northland and holds casual play 4 days a week.
The Westport Chess Club has been "going strong since 1986," in its own words, and it still meets in a bar: the Westport Flea Market Bar & Grill on Westport Road.
IM Michael Brooks, a Kansas City player who rarely played outside Missouri, beat GM Alexander Shabalov in round 2 of the 2009 US Championship in St. Louis. Zeb Fortman II rose through the 1970s and 1980s and was a few points short of master when he stopped competing in 1989. As of 2023 he was the only African American in the Missouri Chess Hall of Fame and taught chess in 6 schools through KC LINC. Jessica Lauser, a Kansas City native, was a 6-time US Blind Champion as of February 2025.
Kansas City has never hosted the US Open (St. Louis, about 250 miles east, has hosted it 4 times), and its newest chapter is smaller and odder. The Rock Island Bridge, a 1905 railway bridge, reopened on 1 April 2026 as an entertainment district, and in October 2026 it added the city's first chess park.
The Westport Chess Club meets at Westport Flea Market Bar & Grill, 817 Westport Rd, every Tuesday from 18:30 to 22:00, in the room with a window onto Westport Road. Membership is free, and you don't need to RSVP or bring a board. Your first visit is free, then it's $2 for adults and $1 for kids and students.
It's a bar with food, so most members are 21 or older, but kids from 6 are welcome. The club also plays online every Thursday at 19:00 on Chess.com, and it runs 2 small tournaments a month on Tuesdays (see below).
Pawn and Pint at 613 Walnut St in the River Market is a board game tavern with more than 1,000 games and a $7 entry per person. It's open Monday to Thursday 16:00 to 23:00, Friday 16:00 to 01:30, Saturday 11:00 to 01:30 and Sunday 11:00 to 23:00. Its site lists pop-ups, karaoke and trivia with no chess events, so bring your own opponent.
PH Coffee, at 2200 Lexington Ave in Pendleton Heights, has been listed on VisitKC as the home of a free chess club on the second Sunday of each month from 14:00. It's volunteer-led and built for beginners, and the listing's remaining dates are Sunday 8 November and Sunday 13 December 2026. The event page has since gone offline, so check with the café before you go.
Nirvana Coffee & Games at 10707 E Winner Rd in Independence is a coffee shop and game café, open Monday to Thursday 12:00 to 22:00, Friday 12:00 to 00:00, Saturday 10:00 to 00:00 and Sunday 09:00 to 21:00. Its site lists karaoke, trivia, open mic, RPG and board game nights. An older listing mentions a free Monday chess night at 18:00, and the café's own site doesn't, so call ahead before you plan a Monday around it.
Cardboard Corner Cafe at 9240 Metcalf Ave in Overland Park opened in 2021, and its second stall at the Lenexa Public Market, 8750 Penrose Ln, has around 250 games free to play while you eat. Neither lists a chess night, so bring a set and a friend.
Chartreuse Saloon at 1627 Oak St in the East Crossroads is a 21+ bar with pool and darts, and 2021 press described custom game tables built for chess and checkers. We haven't confirmed it in 2026, so check before you go.
Westport is the city's drop-in club night (see above). The other main club is in the Northland, with a monthly chapter on the Kansas side.
The Kansas City Chess Club (kansascitychessclub.com) is at 5545 N Oak Trafficway in the Northland. Its fall 2026 casual play runs September to December:
It's closed Monday, Thursday and Sunday. Casual play is free for members and $10 for visitors ($15 for a family), open to all ages and levels. The club uses more than one suite in the building (8 and 10A), so check the suite on the event before you go. Casual nights also go up on the Kansas City Chess Meetup group.
It also runs US Chess rated events, youth tournaments and the Kansas City Open each August. KCUR reported in early 2025 that it also offers paid memberships and classes from the Regal Chess School. Earlier in 2026 the club listed weekly cash-prize tournaments on Wednesday evenings and Saturday afternoons; the fall schedule doesn't show them, so ask before you turn up for one.
The Kansas City Chess Club's Overland Park chapter meets on the first Monday of every month from 18:00 to 20:00 at Kansas Christian College, 7401 Metcalf Ave, Overland Park. Use the side entrance of Building 6, the chapel. Members play free and visitors pay $10 ($15 for a family). The next dates are Monday 2 November and Monday 7 December 2026.
A group called KC Knights has listed free casual chess on Mondays from 18:00 to 20:00 at Johnson County's Central Resource Library, 9875 W 87th St, Overland Park. Its own page was offline when we checked in October 2026, so confirm before you go.
The Kansas City Chess Park opened on Saturday 3 October 2026 on the Rock Island Bridge, 1799 American Royal Dr. It has permanent game tables on the bridge's West Truss, overlooking the Kansas River, and you get a bag of magnetic chess pieces to play with. It's free and open to all ages. The idea came from Kate White and Skiggity, the bridge's creative program directors.
KSHB gave the hours as Sunday to Thursday 11:00 to 22:00 and Friday and Saturday 11:00 to 23:00. The bridge's FAQ says it's open March to December, so the park is seasonal. Its events calendar lists free casual-play sessions on the South Wing on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 October 2026, 11:30 to 15:30. A weekly group, the Rock Island Bridge Chess Club, posts on Instagram as @kansascitychesspark.
The Central Library rooftop at 14 W 10th St has a set of giant chess pieces on the roof terrace. It's free during library hours: Sunday 13:00 to 17:00, Monday to Wednesday 09:00 to 19:00 and Thursday to Saturday 09:00 to 17:00. The rooftop is outdoors, so pick a dry day.
All of Westport's current tournaments are unrated, and its tournament page has the details. For US Chess rated games, go to the Kansas City Chess Club.
