Los Angeles has played chess with a celebrity cast since the 1930s. Humphrey Bogart took lessons in Hollywood, a Rothschild heiress flew the best players in the world to the beach, and Boris Spassky beat Bobby Fischer at a tournament in Santa Monica. Today the scene is spread across a sprawling city: a beachfront chess park, outdoor boards from Mar Vista to Hollywood, and a longtime club in West LA. This guide covers where to play in Los Angeles now and the glamour that came before.
I run Checkmate IRL and play most of my chess in Berlin, where the scene is dense and walkable. Los Angeles is the opposite kind of city, and its chess is the same: spread out, sun-soaked, and scattered across neighbourhoods from the Santa Monica beach to Monterey Park. You drive to chess here. But the history is unmatched on the West Coast, and the beach is still the beach.
Los Angeles chess has always been entangled with Hollywood. The central figure is Herman Steiner, who settled in the city in 1932, became chess editor of the Los Angeles Times, and wrote the paper's chess column until he died in 1955. He founded the Steiner Chess Club, later the Hollywood Chess Group, in a clubhouse next to his home, and it became the social center of West Coast chess.
The membership was pure Los Angeles. Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall played there, along with Charles Boyer and José Ferrer. Bogart was no dilettante: he took lessons from Steiner, directed tournaments for the US Chess Federation, and stayed active in the California State Chess Association. Steiner himself was the real thing, winning the US Championship in 1948 and earning the International Master title. In Los Angeles, even the chess had a celebrity cast.
When Steiner died in 1955, the club passed to Jacqueline Piatigorsky, a chess patron from the Rothschild family and the wife of the cellist Gregor Piatigorsky. She renamed the club in Steiner's memory and then did something no American had done at that scale: she funded two of the strongest tournaments in the world. The Piatigorsky Cups were held in Los Angeles in 1963 and at the Miramar Hotel in Santa Monica in 1966. The 1966 event was won by Boris Spassky, with Bobby Fischer a point behind in second. Long before St. Louis bought its way to a chess capital, Los Angeles got there first, with Hollywood money and a cellist's wife. Spassky beat Fischer on the beach in 1966.
Los Angeles chess is shaped by the city itself: huge, decentralized, and car-dependent. There is no single chess district. Instead the scene runs through a handful of established clubs, outdoor boards scattered from the beach to the east side, and the broader Southern California Chess Federation league. The city is also, less formally, a hub for the chess content world, with many of the game's streamers and creators based in and around LA.

The Santa Monica International Chess Park on Ocean Front Walk, just south of the pier, was for decades the iconic California chess scene: free tables, all levels, several languages, the Pacific behind you. In 2022 the city removed the permanent chess tables in a contested anti-crime decision that drew real backlash from the chess community. The regulars kept coming. An oversized concrete board is still set into the ground, and the caged giant pieces can be used by collecting the key from the police substation next to the pier. Bring your own set and clock for a normal game.
Elsewhere, a giant chess board on Victoria Avenue in Mar Vista is a quieter west-side option. Pan Pacific Park near the Grove and the Fairfax district draws casual outdoor games. There are public chess tables on Whitley Avenue in Hollywood. And the Chess Park Lounge in Monterey Park is a longtime gathering spot for the San Gabriel Valley's Chinese-American chess community, where Western chess sits alongside xiangqi.

Los Angeles had a world-class chess era before any other American city on this list, built on Hollywood money in the 1960s. New York has the hustle and St. Louis has the institution. Los Angeles had the movie stars, and it still has the ocean.
