Playing Chess in Warsaw: From the 1935 Olympiad to a Thursday Rapid at the Federation

Before the war, Poland was one of the strongest chess countries in the world, and Warsaw was where its players met. The city hosted the Chess Olympiad in 1935, lost most of its masters to the war and the occupation, and built its chess again from almost nothing. Today it has an open rapid every Thursday at the national federation, a free Saturday social in English, chess sessions in cafés across the city, and the Grand Chess Tour every spring. This guide covers where to play in Warsaw now and the history underneath it.

I run Checkmate IRL and play most of my chess in Berlin, where the game lives in bars and parks. Warsaw runs on a timetable: a tournament or a meeting on most days of the week, and stone tables in dozens of parks. The city has no single café where everyone ends up, so it pays to know the days.

A brief chess history of Warsaw

Warsaw's chess began in a café. Honoratka, named after its owner Honorata Zimermann, opened around 1828 in an annexe of a palace on Miodowa. A 1-złoty entrance fee bought a cup of coffee, the radicals of the 1830 uprising met there, and so did the city's chess masters.

From 1840 the strongest of them was a Russian. Alexander Petrov, whose name is on the Petrov Defence, lived in Warsaw for most of his last 27 years and played his best-known game there in 1844.

The city's own great player was Szymon Winawer, born in 1838 into a merchant family of 10 brothers. He learned his chess in the cafés, and at his first international tournament, Paris 1867, he tied for second with Wilhelm Steinitz. At Vienna in 1882 he tied with Steinitz again, this time for first.

Winawer ran the family business for a living. He twice finished level with the first world champion, and the Winawer Variation of the French Defence still carries his name. He's buried in the Jewish cemetery on Okopowa.

A formal club came in 1899, the Warsaw Society of Chess Enthusiasts. On 11 April 1926 the Polish Chess Federation was founded in its rooms on Wierzbowa, the day before the first Polish championship began. Dawid Przepiórka, born in Warsaw in 1880, won it.

What followed was a golden age. Poland won the Olympiad in Hamburg in 1930, took silver in 1931 and 1939 and bronze in 1935 and 1937. From 1928 to 1939 it missed the podium once.

The Olympiad of 1935

The 6th Chess Olympiad was played in Warsaw from 16 to 31 August 1935, in the Officers' Garrison Casino, with 20 teams and Przepiórka running the tournament. It was hot and humid for 2 weeks.

World champion Alexander Alekhine played first board for France and went unbeaten, a few weeks before the match with Max Euwe that cost him his title. Paul Keres, 19, led Estonia. Vera Menchik won the women's world championship alongside without dropping a game, 9 from 9, as she had won every game in Prague 4 years earlier.

Alekhine's cat, named Chess, went missing during the event. A newsboy had sold it to a passer-by, who brought it back after appeals in the press and on the radio. Alekhine paid him back the 20 złoty.

Before the last round the United States led with 51½ points, Poland had 50½ and Sweden 49½. Poland lost to Yugoslavia. Sweden went past, and the hosts finished third.

Poland led Sweden into the last round of its own Olympiad and finished behind it.

What the war did

The finals of the 1939 Olympiad began in Buenos Aires on 1 September, the day Germany invaded Poland. Poland took silver, half a point behind Germany. Several of its players stayed in Argentina, among them Miguel Najdorf, who had made his career in Warsaw.

Najdorf's wife, daughter, parents and 4 siblings were murdered. He set blindfold records, 40 boards in 1943 and 45 in 1947 (the second stood until 2011), partly in the hope that the news would reach Europe and tell his family he was alive. None of them had survived.

In January 1940 the Gestapo arrested about 30 players at a gathering of Warsaw chess players, which one Polish account places in a chess café run in a private flat on Marszałkowska. The non-Jewish players were released. Przepiórka and several other Jewish players were shot at Palmiry that year.

Alekhine came back to Warsaw in 1941 and 1942, as a guest at the occupation governor's tournaments. The guide to Kraków covers those tournaments.

About 90% of Poland's leading players were killed or ended up in emigration, the Polish Press Agency wrote for the federation's centenary in 2026. Poland's first post-war grandmaster came in 1976.

After 1989

Polonia Warszawa's chess team won 9 Polish team titles between 1992 and 2006 and finished second in the European Club Cup 5 times.

In December 2021 the World Rapid and Blitz lost its host a few weeks before the start and moved to Warsaw's national stadium. Nodirbek Abdusattorov, 17, beat Magnus Carlsen on the way to the rapid title. In the blitz, Jan-Krzysztof Duda finished second on the same score as the winner.

How big is the Warsaw chess scene today?

The Polish Chess Federation has its office at ul. Marszałkowska 84/92 and counted more than 151,000 registered members and 505 clubs nationally in spring 2026. The regional federation lists close to 40 clubs in Warsaw. Two of the country's best-known grandmasters, Mateusz Bartel and Monika Soćko, were born in the city.

Every spring the Grand Chess Tour opens its season here with the Super Rapid & Blitz Poland. The 2026 edition was played from 5 to 9 May at the POLIN Museum, and Hans Niemann won it as a wildcard on his tour debut. Earlier winners were Duda, Carlsen twice, and Vladimir Fedoseev.

The Polish championship was played in Warsaw in March 2026. Szymon Gumularz and Oliwia Kiołbasa each won a first title.

Cafés with a set

Bishop Cafe on Wilcza is a breakfast bistro where reviewers mention chess sets on the tables. Paradox Cafe on Anielewicza is a board-game café that's been going since 2003. Ask at the bar.

Chess clubs in Warsaw

Warsaw's clubs are mostly junior academies and league teams, and we found none that advertises an open evening for adults. The way in is through events.

Outdoor chess in Warsaw

Warsaw has stone chess tables in a great many parks, and our map lists about 50 outdoor spots. We found none with a crowd of regulars the way Washington Square has, so bring an opponent and your own pieces.

The largest cluster is 8 tables in Park Obwodu Praga AK on Grochowska. Pole Mokotowskie has tables on its Ochota side, and there are giant boards at Kępa Potocka and in Park Bródnowski.

On the Vistula, a chess corner with 3 stone tables opened in 2018 at the north end of Bulwar Karskiego, built with the federation. That summer the tourist information point next to it lent out sets.
