Melbourne's oldest chess club was founded in 1866 and still meets in Fitzroy, less than 100 metres from Brunswick Street. The first Australian Championship was played in the city in 1885, and the State Library holds what it calls the third biggest chess collection in the world. Today Melbourne has a free walk-in night at that 1866 club, chess in bars in Carlton and Collingwood, and 2 stone chessboards at the top of the library steps. This guide covers the chess clubs and chess bars in Melbourne, where to play outdoors, and the history underneath it.
I run Checkmate IRL and play most of my chess in Berlin. Melbourne is easy to drop into if you know where to look: its 3 best casual games are in Fitzroy, Carlton and Collingwood, about 2 km apart, and 2 of them are free. The rest of the chess venues in Melbourne are suburban clubs, board game bars and a few outdoor boards.
The Melbourne Chess Club started in 1866 as the Melbourne Chess Association, and it's counted among the oldest continuously running chess clubs in Australia and the Southern Hemisphere. Its home on Leicester Street in Fitzroy is a former factory listed on the Victorian Heritage Database.
Between 1898 and 1936 Charles G. M. Watson won the club championship 8 times, and he took the Australian title in Melbourne in 1922 and 1931.
The first Australian Championship was played in Melbourne in 1885. Frederick Karl Esling won it after a single match game, when his opponent, George Gossip, defaulted. Australia's first chess champion was crowned without finishing the match.
Melbourne hosted the championship at least 14 more times through 2002, 4 of them between 1992 and 2002.
Darryl Johansen, born in Melbourne in 1959, holds the record of 6 Australian Championships, won between 1984 and 2012. He also won 12 Victorian titles, played 14 Olympiads, and in 1995 became Australia's second grandmaster after Ian Rogers. He went on to coach in Melbourne through his company, Chess Ideas.
One of his students was Bobby Cheng, who moved to Melbourne from New Zealand at 10. In 2009 he won the World Under-12 Championship, which Wikipedia describes as the only world over-the-board title ever won by an Australian. He became the youngest Victorian champion in 2011, won the Australian Championship in 2016 and became a grandmaster in 2019.
State Library Victoria holds the M.V. Anderson Chess Collection. Magnus Victor Anderson donated about 6,700 volumes between 1959 and 1966, and the collection has grown past 13,000. The library describes it as the third biggest chess collection in the world, and since June 2025 there have been 2 free stone boards on the steps outside.
The social scene came later: Acid Chess Club started in 2021 and Ms Chess in 2024, and Broadsheet wrote up the new clubs in 2025.
In Melbourne, bar chess happens when a social club takes over a rooftop bar or a pub for an evening or an afternoon.
Acid Chess Club Thursdays was founded in 2021 by James "Benji" Benjamin and Jack Irvine. It started in a co-working space in Thornbury, moved to Good Gnocchi in Carlton North, and relaunched in February 2023 at Runner Up, the rooftop bar on Level 2 of Collingwood Yards, 35 Johnston Street. It regularly draws 50 or more players, and a sister club started in London in June 2024.
Nights run from 19:00 to 23:00 and alternate between learn-and-play sessions and tournament nights. Tournament nights usually have 3 brackets, Chill, Hectic and FLINTA, with sign-ups from 19:00, and the Chill bracket is for players rated up to 1250.
The club's Instagram bio lists the last and the third-last Thursday of each month, so roughly every other week. Check Instagram for the date before you go.
Every July the club also throws Chesstivus, a festival at Collingwood Yards. The 2025 edition ran on 24 July from 18:00 to 23:30 with live music.
The Melbourne Chess Society runs free social chess afternoons at the Prince Alfred, 191-197 Grattan Street, Carlton, from 12:30 to 17:30 on some Saturdays. Around 80 people come, beginners are welcome, and boards, pieces and clocks are provided, though bringing your own set helps.
The dates move around, so book a free place on the society's Meetup page first. In 2026 it also ran a few Wednesday after-work nights from 17:30, at Brick Lane Brewing on Queen Street and at Oche, a darts bar in the CBD. Those are irregular too.
Ms Chess is a collective for women, LGBTQI+ and non-binary players, founded in March 2024 by Hosna Eqbal. June 2026 listings had it meeting monthly, rotating between Skydiver Records in Collingwood, Capers in Thornbury and Highnote in Northcote.
For a game with a friend on any other night, Melbourne has board game bars and cafés. None of them advertises chess, so bring a travel set to be safe.
Melbourne Chess Club (melbournechessclub.org) is at 66 Leicester Street in Fitzroy, a short tram ride from the CBD. For most visitors it's the place to start, because of one night.
The Wednesday Social Night runs from 18:30 until about 21:30, it's free, and you don't need to register. It's for every level, from people new to over-the-board chess up, with casual games and clocks optional.
The club also runs a classical tournament on Monday nights from 19:00, junior coaching on Saturday mornings and a Saturday Allegro, and says you can drop in between 14:00 and 18:00 most Saturdays. Its published hours are indicative only, so check the events page before a weekend visit.
Darebin Chess Club (darebinchessclub.org.au) runs a free drop-in every Monday from 17:30 to 19:30 at Preston Library, 266 Gower Street. Adults and children of all abilities play side by side, and you can come and go as you like. Until 13 November 2026 it also runs a Friday evening rapid tournament there.
Chess Artists Caulfield plays at the Herzl Club, 222 Balaclava Road, Caulfield North. Its Social Chess Club runs on Tuesdays from 14:00 to 17:00, one of the few weekday daytime games in Melbourne, and Sunday afternoons are for competitions. The site doesn't list a fee, so ask before your first visit.
Box Hill Chess Club, founded in 1952, is at 21A Electra Avenue in Ashwood. Friday nights from 19:15 are ACF and FIDE rated, and on Sundays there's an hour of social chess from 11:00 during school terms, a rookies event at 12:30 on the second Sunday of the month, and a rated "Sunday Arvo" tournament from 16:00.
Most of Melbourne's other clubs are tournament clubs with a weekly night. Chess Victoria keeps the full list, and it's worth getting in touch before you turn up for a casual game.
The best outdoor chess in Melbourne is at the State Library Victoria forecourt, 328 Swanston Street. In June 2025 the library replaced its weather-worn vinyl boards with 2 permanent inlaid chessboards at the top of the forecourt steps. The white squares are Harcourt granite from Mount Alexander and the black squares are Australian bluestone from Port Fairy, and the heritage permit describes a board of about 4 by 4 metres. More than A$50,000 from the library's 2023 End of Year Appeal paid for them.
The boards are free to use, and the library lends outdoor sets between 10:00 and 17:00. The M.V. Anderson Chess Collection is upstairs, on level 2 of the Ian Potter Queen's Hall.
Our map also shows a giant board in St Kilda Botanical Gardens. We know it from map data only, so check before you go and bring your own pieces.
If you search a map for chess in the suburbs, most of the boards that come up are painted in school playgrounds and aren't open to the public.
Melbourne Chess Club also hosts the Victorian Championship, and the 2026 edition runs from 22 August to 24 October. The Australian Masters, an invitational grandmaster round robin, was played in Melbourne from 1987, but we couldn't confirm whether it still runs.
