Hold the night on the same weekday and time every week, give it a name, and post the next date in one place people already check, which for most social chess clubs is their Instagram. Then put a poster up at the venue, ask the venue to share the night, and list it where players search, such as a directory of social chess clubs or a chess app. Once people arrive, put a host at the door to greet newcomers and find them a game.

A fixed slot and a name. A set weekday and start time let people plan their week around the night, and a name gives them something to search for. In London, Knight Club has its night every Tuesday.
If the venue changes from night to night, tell people in one fixed place where to find it. Knight Gambit in Munich plays at a different venue around the city each time, and its Instagram bio always shows where the next one is.
Write one short description and reuse it everywhere. It should answer what a first-timer wonders: is it for me, when and where is it, does it cost anything, can I come as a beginner, do I bring a board, and where do I check the next date?
For the setup itself, from finding a venue to buying sets, see How to start a chess club or a chess night.
Pick one home for the date and point everything else at it. For most social chess clubs, that home is Instagram. In our social chess data report, 74% of the 290 clubs in our directory in October 2026 had an Instagram account, and for 48% it was their only public channel. An own website came next, at 18%.
Those figures come from our own sample. It leans toward clubs with a public social media presence, which pushes these shares up.
Pin the next date to the top of the profile. A group chat keeps regulars in the loop, and public event listings help new people find you: our chess events pages gather upcoming casual nights in a few cities from public listings.
List it where people look for a game:
The venue already has the people you want: its regulars. Put a poster at the door or the bar with the night, the time and where the next date goes up, and leave a printout on the tables during the night.
Ask the venue to post the night on its own channels and to mention it to guests. You're filling a quiet weeknight for them, so it's an easy ask, best made when you first agree on the night.
Checkmate IRL has a free printable table kit with a QR code to the app and space for your club's name, and on request we'll make a poster with your club's name and a QR code.
Most people come to a social chess night alone. Ask a regular to watch the door each week, say hello to anyone new and pair them with someone patient. Say in every post that beginners are welcome.
For regulars, add something to play for over the weeks: a season table, a blitz Swiss once a month, or small awards such as quickest win and biggest upset. Chess tournament formats compares the options, and How to run a Swiss tournament covers the most common one.
Try a theme now and then. Some clubs add a DJ or live jazz, and some have held a singles night.
Share the night afterwards: the standings, the winner or a photo of the room. Checkmate IRL makes a result card for every game and tournament that you can post straight to Instagram or WhatsApp.
In one place people already check, usually the club's own Instagram with the next date pinned. In October 2026, 74% of the social chess clubs in our directory had an Instagram account and 48% used no other public channel. Add a group chat for regulars and list the night where new players search.
Say plainly in every post that beginners are welcome, boards are provided and most people come alone. Then ask a regular to welcome newcomers at the door and find each of them a patient opponent.
Submit it to the Checkmate IRL social chess clubs directory, where a person reviews every suggestion. In the Checkmate IRL app, you can also list each night so players nearby see it on the map and sign up, and the organizer tools are free.
Yes, where you can. A fixed weekday and time is easy to remember and to plan around. Most clubs in our own directory that we can measure meet weekly, usually on a Tuesday or Wednesday evening.
Ask when you agree on the night: a post on the bar's channels, a poster at the door or the bar, and a word to guests. A full room on a quiet weeknight is good for the bar too.
Yes. Checkmate IRL has a free printable table kit with a QR code and space for your club's name, and makes a poster with your club's name and a QR code on request through the page for organizers.
